Chic Summer Vacation Outfit Ideas That’ll Make You the Best-Dressed

Chic on vacation is a weird thing to figure out. You don’t want to look like you tried too hard, but you also don’t want to show up in airport leggings and a free conference t shirt. There’s a middle zone where you look like you have your life together but you’re also clearly relaxed. That’s what chic actually means on a trip.

I used to overpack a “fancy” suitcase for vacations and then never wear half of it. The chic outfits I actually wore over and over were always the simple ones. One nice dress, one good pair of pants, basic tops, real shoes. That’s it. Chic isn’t about more stuff, it’s about better stuff in the right shapes.

Here’s the list. Most of these you can put together with pieces you probably already own.

1. Linen jumpsuit + leather sandals

The easiest chic fit there is. A wide leg linen jumpsuit in beige or black, leather slide sandals, gold hoops, straw bag. Looks like you summer somewhere expensive even when you’re at a regular Airbnb.

2. Silk slip dress + flat sandals

A satin or silk feel slip dress in a soft colour like champagne or black, flat tan sandals. Throw on a thin gold chain. Works for dinner, drinks, or just walking around at sunset.

3. White button down + tailored shorts

An oversized white linen button down half tucked into tan or cream tailored shorts with leather slides. Sounds basic but on vacation this looks really put together.

4. Maxi skirt + fitted tank

A flowy maxi skirt in a solid colour with a fitted ribbed tank tucked in, simple flats or sandals. Easy to walk in, photographs nicely, doesn’t show heat sweat as much as fitted dresses.

5. Linen pants + bralette + open shirt

Hot day fit that still looks pulled together. Wide leg linen pants, a bralette style top, a linen button down open over it as a layer. Beach to bar in one outfit.

6. Slip skirt + plain tee

A satin slip skirt in soft pink, cream, or black with a basic fitted white tee tucked in and white sneakers or sandals. The mix of casual tee and silky skirt is the whole vibe.

7. Floral midi dress + low heels

A small print floral midi dress with low block heels or pretty flats. Skip the big tropical prints though, tiny prints in soft colours look more expensive. I have a whole summer floral dress outfit post if you want more print picks.

8. Linen shorts + cropped knit

A fine knit short sleeve top in cream or beige with tan linen shorts and leather sandals. The knit feels nicer than a regular tee.

9. Wrap dress + flat sandals

A wrap style midi dress is flattering on most bodies. Pick a solid colour or small print, add flat leather sandals, done.

10. Wide leg trousers + silk tank

Going to dinner fit. Cream or black wide leg trousers, a silky tank tucked in, low heels or nice flats. Looks like you booked a real restaurant.

11. White matching set

A white linen or knit short set, top and bottom matching. Slides or white sneakers. Looks intentional even though it’s two pieces. There’s more in my all white summer outfit post.

12. Halter dress + low sandals

A simple halter neck dress in a solid colour, flat sandals. The neckline does the work so the rest can stay easy.

13. Linen midi dress + belt + sandals

A loose linen midi dress cinched at the waist with a thin tan leather belt. The belt is the whole point. It turns a sack dress into a real outfit.

14. Off shoulder top + white jeans

An off shoulder linen top with white wide leg jeans and gold hoops. Beachy but the white jeans keep it from feeling like a swim cover up.

15. Slip dress + denim jacket

A slip dress with a denim jacket thrown over your shoulders for cooler evenings. Add white sneakers or flat sandals. Easy day to night.

16. Crochet top + linen pants

A cream crochet or knit top with wide leg linen pants and slides. Coastal but elevated.

17. Tube dress + light cardigan

A simple ribbed tube midi dress with a thin oversized cardigan over the shoulders, flat sandals. For breezy nights.

18. Polo shirt + tailored shorts

A fitted knit polo with tailored bermuda shorts and loafers or slides. Looks old money but you basically just put on a polo and shorts.

19. Strapless dress + flat sandals + straw hat

A simple strapless cotton or linen midi dress with flat sandals and a big straw hat. The hat is doing 60 percent of the chic work here.

20. Eyelet top + cream skirt

A white eyelet blouse with a cream or beige midi skirt and leather sandals. Romantic but not too sweet.

Real things about looking chic on vacation.

Pick a color palette and stick to it. Three or four soft colors max. Cream, beige, white, one accent. Everything mixes, photos look clean, your suitcase doesn’t look chaotic. I save outfit combos on my Pinterest board before trips because seeing the colors laid out helps more than reading lists.

Fabric matters more than the cut. A basic shape in linen, silk, or fine knit looks chic. The same shape in cheap polyester looks like a costume. Spend a little more on the fabric, save on the styling.

Real shoes only. No flip flops outside the pool. No beat up running sneakers in restaurants. Clean white sneakers, real leather sandals, simple flats. That’s the whole shoe wardrobe.

Gold jewelry small and stacked. Thin gold hoops, one small chain, maybe a thin bracelet. Don’t pile on big statement pieces. Chic is quiet.

One nice bag for everything. A small leather crossbody or a structured straw bag. Skip the giant beach tote in the city and skip the tiny chain bag at the beach. One mid size bag in a neutral color does it all.

Iron your stuff or accept the wrinkles. Linen wrinkles. That’s part of the charm. But if it’s wrinkled and also stained and also fits weird, that’s not chic, that’s just sloppy. Pick your battles.

Hair pulled back works almost always. A low bun, a slick pony, a claw clip. Loose hair in heat gets messy fast and stops looking intentional. Pulled back hair makes any basic outfit look more done.

Don’t pack heels you can’t walk in. Vacation usually means uneven ground, cobblestones, sand, long walks. Bring low block heels at most. Sky high stilettos sit in the suitcase the whole trip every time.

One nice dinner outfit. That’s all you need. A slip dress, a linen jumpsuit, or trousers and a silk top. Rewear it twice across the trip with different accessories. Nobody is keeping track.

That’s the list. 20 chic vacation fits with pieces that actually pack and rewear well. Skip the trendy stuff, skip the loud prints, and stop overpacking. The most stylish people on vacation are wearing five things on rotation and they look great every day.
